Intervention Internships

2019 Spring Intervention team

Intervention interns will be assigned to a school and program facilitator prior to the beginning of the school year. Then, interns will assist the SR/SF Program Facilitator in conducting concurrent 14-week sessions and case management at one of our school sites in North Austin, South Austin, Kyle/Buda, New Braunfels, San Marcos, Seguin & San Antonio.

These sessions will cover topics such as creating realistic expectations about relationships, developing conflict resolution strategies, healthy coparenting, and making healthy choices for their future. The interns will also assist with additional activities, as needed.

  • We partner with Texas State University, The University of Texas at Austin (UT-Austin) and San Antonio (UTSA), Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) and St. Edward’s University to recruit and place interns from a variety of disciplines including, but not limited to Family and Child Studies, Human Development and Family Sciences, Psychology, and Social Work. Interns may be advanced undergraduate or graduate students.

    Intern expectations:

Interns are expected to work 2-2.5 days per week. SR/SF Interns are typically assigned to a Tuesday/Thursday or Wednesday/Friday schedule with a possible third day. SR/SF Interns are expected to make a 15-20 hours per week commitment unless other arrangements have been made with SR/SF. Although 2-2.5 workdays per week are required, interns can work up to 5 days a week if they need to complete a larger internship assignment. Please be aware you could be assigned to an online, in-person and/or hybrid internship, depending on your assigned site locations needs.

    COVID-19 Modifications:

SR/SF is currently working with the school districts we service and will follow their COVID-19 protocols. Assignments to these campuses might be online, in person and/or hybrid. SR/SF will comply accordingly and will adjust to the changes that follow during each fiscal calendar year. Interns are being asked to be flexible as changes might occur during their internship due to COVID-19.

    Training:

All interns are required to attend a four-day training regarding issues such as: domestic violence, case management, curriculum facilitation, and SR/SF procedures. To maximize of our interns’ experience, we hold our training the week before the Texas State University semester officially begins so that everyone is trained and ready to work with students on their first official class day.

Research Assistantships

This research assistantship requires most of the work to be completed at Texas State University in the SR/SF research lab under the supervision of graduate research assistants and Dr. Norma Perez-Brena. Some travel to the target high schools is required at the beginning and end of the semester for data collection activities. Research assistants will be assigned a lab schedule before the beginning of the school year.

Then, research assistants will assist the SR/SF Program graduate assistants in conducting participant recruitment, focus groups, quantitative data collection, data management, coding, and analysis. The research assistants will also assist with additional activities such as biweekly meetings and research article discussion, as needed.

SR/SF 2021 Research team
  • Undergraduate research assistants (UGRAs) help with participant recruitment, focus groups, quantitative data collection, management, and analysis. We offer research assistantships to Texas State University students from various disciplines, including but not limited to Human Development and Family Sciences, Psychology, Sociology, and Social Work. Assistants may be advanced undergraduates, juniors and seniors.

    What research assistants can gain:
SR/SF gives research assistants an opportunity to directly help families of the San Antonio/Austin/San Marcos school systems by helping the program make evidence-based decisions and generate knowledge that can impact adolescent parents across the nation. They will be able to not only fulfill internship hours, but also gain experience under postgraduate students and researchers in the Human Development/Psychology fields. While participating in SR/SF, UGRA’s will:

    • learn how to analyze articles
    • implement culturally responsive data-collection procedures in-person and online
    • manage and analyze data
    • present research findings
    • get a true understanding of what it means to conduct research
    • gain experience to include in your CV
    • gain faculty and graduate mentorship
    • gain letters of recommendations

Additionally, they get to develop close friendships with likeminded, driven people who love helping their communities! Overall, this program is a great opportunity for not only your professional advancement (resumes, job applications, CV, etc.), but for your personal advancement, as well.

    Research assistant expectations:

SR/SF research assistants are expected to make an 8-10 hours per week commitment unless other arrangements have been made with SR/SF. UGRA tasks are completed in the SR/SF lab unless COVID-19 safety protocols require us to work online.

    Training:

All research assistants are required to complete CITI training and attend a two-day training regarding issues such as phone center protocols, data collection protocols, domestic violence, and SR/SF procedures. To prepare our research assistants for their assistantship, we hold our training the week before the Texas State University semester officially begins. Everyone will be trained and ready to work with SR/SF in the first week of the semester.

We accept applications on a rolling basis in preparation for the next semester.
