Dr. Biediger-Friedman and Dr. Maleki presented at the 2025 Aging in Texas Conference
June 26, 2025 - Dr. Biediger-Friedman and Dr. Maleki led a presentation titled ‘NUEVA: Nutrition for Underserved Elders Via Application development and the Older Adult Socioeconomic Disadvantage Index (OASDI)’ at the 2025 Aging in Texas Conference.
They presented publicly available program resources for NUEVA. Additionally, the novel Older Adult Socioeconomic Disadvantage Index (OASDI) was reviewed, highlighting potentially at-risk Central Texas assessments of older adults populations.
NUEVA Publishes Third Paper
January 24, 2026 - NUEVA investigator, Nishat Tabassum, a graduate student, and Drs. Lesli Biediger-Friedman, Cassandra M. Johnson, and Michelle Lane, with Seanna Marceaux, the Chief Strategy & Impact Officer at Meals on Wheels, authored an original research article titled “Digital and Technology-Based Nutrition Interventions, Including Medically Tailored Meals (MTMs) for Older Adults in the U.S.—A Scoping Review” in the Special Issue Nutrition and Health Throughout the Lifespan in January 2026.

January 20, 2025 - NUEVA investigators Drs. Shadi Maleki, Cassandra M. Johnson, Francis A. Mendez Mediavilla, Ramalingam Shanmugam and Lesli Biediger-Friedman authored an original research article titled “A socioeconomic disadvantage index for informing policy, systems, and environmental change interventions for senior nutrition programs” in the Frontiers in Public Health journal in January 2025.
NUEVA Team Attends Senior Design Day at Ingram School of Engineering
December 6, 2024 - Students working with Dr. Eduardo Perez earned the distinction of best project for Industrial Engineering at Texas State's annual Senior Design Day in the Ingram School of Engineering. The ultimate goal of this project is to optimize the operational processes at Meals on Wheels Central Texas by identifying bottlenecks and streamline operations through process mapping, improving customer service through call volume reduction, and thoroughly analyzing the processes to identify areas for Improvement within the organization. Using Industrial Engineering methodologies to successfully optimize the processes, we strive to ensure the organization's longstanding commitment to serving the community is upheld.

April 26, 2024 - NUEVA project partner & Nutrition Coordination Director of the Nutrition and Aging Resource Center Ashley Danielson, RDN, LD travelled to Texas State University to meet with the NUEVA team, visit the Translational Health Research Center, and try out the NUEVA app during a ride along of meal deliveries. We enjoyed Ashley's visit and hope that she'll come back to see us soon!
